Approximation of arbitrary polygonal objects using space filling curves versus a bounding box approach

چکیده
Using multiple intervals on space filling curves has a benefit to merely approximating the polygon by a bounding box for indexing purposes. These intervals feature a shapes closer to those of arbitrary, non rectangular polygons. In this paper we examine whether SCUBA (Space filling Curves versus Unsophisticated Bounding box Approximation) is a feasible approach in comparison to a simple bounding box index, and how to find a reasonable break even point between space usage and access time.

Locality and Bounding-Box Quality of Two-Dimensional Space-Filling Curves
Space-filling curves can be used to organise points in the plane into bounding-box hierarchies (such as R-trees). We develop measures of the bounding-box quality of space-filling curves that express how effective different space-filling curves are for this purpose. We give general lower bounds on the bounding-box quality measures and on locality according to Gotsman and Lindenbaum for a large c...
متن کاملOriented Bounding Boxes Using Multiresolution Contours for Fast Interference Detection of Arbitrary Geometry Objects
Interference detection of arbitrary geometric objects is not a trivial task due to the heavy computational load imposed by implementation issues. The hierarchically structured bounding boxes help us to quickly isolate the contour of segments in interference. In this paper, a new approach is introduced to treat the interference detection problem involving the representation of arbitrary shaped o...

متن کاملA new method of estimation of the box-counting dimension of multivariate objects using space-filling curves
Box-counting dimension is one of the most widely used fractal dimensions, because it is relatively easy for empirical estimation. Unfortunately, the task is simple only if one operates on oneor twodimensional data. Otherwise, the amount of computation grows exponentially with the number of space coordinates.A newmethod of estimation of the box-counting dimension of multivariate objects using sp...
متن کاملEfficient Collision Detection for Curved Solid Objects
The design-for-assembly technique requires realistic physically based simulation algorithms and in particular efficient geometric collision detection routines. Instead of approximating mechanical parts by large polygonal models, we work with the much smaller original CAD-data directly, thus avoiding precision and tolerance problems. We present a generic algorithm, which can decide whether two s...
